The short answer: start with your cash workflow
Our editorial view: put Mercury on your shortlist if you want to combine banking with payments and broader finance operations. Put Relay on your shortlist if your first priority is setting money aside for taxes, payroll and operating expenses in separate accounts. Neither is a universal winner. Business eligibility, payment needs and your accountant's workflow matter more than the logo.
Mercury
Business banking · Banking & Payments
Online business banking built for startups and small companies (US).
Our take: A clean, modern business account that many new founders open first.
Relay
Business banking · Banking & Payments
Small-business banking with multiple accounts for organizing cash (US).
Our take: Handy if you like splitting money into separate accounts for taxes, payroll and profit.
Where Mercury may fit — and what to check
Mercury describes checking and savings, cards, payments, spend controls, accounting connections and APIs in its business offering. That combination can suit a company managing several finance tasks in one place. The trade-off is that a broad feature set is not proof that every feature is included in your account or plan. Confirm permissions, payment limits, integrations and any extra costs against your actual workflow before applying.
Where Relay may fit — and what to check
Relay emphasizes multiple accounts and access for team members and bookkeepers. We see that as a useful starting point for businesses separating cash by purpose. Its accounting connections include QuickBooks Online and Xero. The trade-off is that a multi-account setup still needs a budgeting process: decide who can move money, how allocations happen and how your books reconcile. Verify which controls and automations are available on the plan you are considering.
Banking safety: the platform is not the bank
Mercury and Relay are financial technology companies, not banks. Their banking services are provided by partner banks, and both describe deposit sweep arrangements. FDIC coverage, where applicable, depends on the bank, account ownership, program requirements and your other deposits at the same bank. It does not insure the fintech company itself. Read current deposit agreements and sweep disclosures, check where deposits are placed and ask the provider about access to funds during a disruption. We do not promise any coverage amount.
Compare the full cost, not just the headline plan
Make a list of the transfers, cards, currencies and accounting workflows you will actually use. Ask each provider which are included, which carry fees and which require another plan. If you need cash deposits, branch access or a particular international payment route, verify that requirement directly rather than assuming an online account supports it. We intentionally omit rates and promotional prices because they can change.
Before you move your business money
Confirm eligibility and required business and owner documents. Test a small transfer, your bookkeeping connection and access permissions before redirecting customer payments. Keep a record of outstanding payments and update payroll and supplier details carefully. Consult your accountant or another qualified adviser about your circumstances; this comparison is general information, not banking or financial advice.
